Bradford’s 2025 City of Culture features Northern Silents’ hugely successful brass and film commission, Echoes of the North.
Echoes of the North: Four Chapters in Time captures the North as it’s rarely seen today. Drawn from over 100 fragments of archive film, this evocative silent movie takes audiences down the highways and byways of Northern life in the early 20th century – our communities and industries, our villages and cities, and the landmark moments that defined our lives.
The music was composed by award-winning composer and BBC presenter Neil Brand as the first ever all-brass soundtrack to a silent movie. Tonight, it’s performed live to a screening of the movie by Bradford’s very own BD1 Brass.
Echoes of the North is part of The Big Brass Blowout, a weekend-long celebration of the best in brass.
Echoes of the North has been created in partnership with Yorkshire Film Archive, North West Film Archive, North East Film Archive, and Archive Film Agency.
Produced by Bradford 2025 City of Culture in association with Northern Silents.
Echoes of the North was commissioned by Northern Silents and Durham Brass Festival with support from PRS Foundation’s The Open Fund for Organisations and Arts Council England.
It had its first performance at Morecambe Winter Gardens, with support from BFI Film Audience Network with National Lottery funding as part of the CURIOUS engagement fund.
