Northern Silents in Morecambe
Silents by the Sea - classic film with live music at Morecambe Winter Gardens
Northern Silents is a Creative Partner of Morecambe Winter Gardens, producing an annual programme of world-class silent film with live music. This page gives a flavour of the work we’ve done so far.
Echoes of the North - four chapters in time
With support from the PRS Foundation, Arts Council England, The Space, and BFI Film Hub North, Northern Silents presented a large-scale new commission at the Winter Gardens in 2022. Echoes of the North: four chapters in time is a new sixty-minute film, created from archive footage from four archives, which celebrates life in the North of England in the first decades of the twentieth century. Scored for brass band by celebrated musician and composer Neil Brand, and performed by Brighouse and Rastrick Band, Echoes of the North premiered at Morecambe Winter Gardens in November 2022 before embarking on a short national tour and a limited online release via The Space.
Nosferatu - a Hallowe’en Special with Off the Rails Creative Jazz Orchestra
Northern Silents very first event at Morecambe Winter Gardens was a special collaboration with the community jazz orchestra, Off the Rails. The players worked for three weeks with Northern Silents Artistic Director, Jonny Best, learning the nuts and bolts of improvising a silent film score. Then, on Hallowe’en night in 2021, the band premiered a unique, spontaneous score to this classic vampire film - to a completely sold out house.
