YSFF takes to the stage for Sheffield spring season

Sunday 13th March and Sunday 15th May 2022

Silent film and live music fans are in for a cinematic treat with YSFF’s spring programme at Abbeydale Picture House in Sheffield.

YSFF returns to the Abbeydale Picture House, Sheffield’s most atmospheric cinema, this spring to present two days of live-scored silent films. Film fans will be able to experience the magic of the golden age of cinema brought to life by leading silent film musicians from the UK and New York in an intimate space on the stage.

The diverse programme includes slapstick comedy triple bills, Buster Keaton and Harold Lloyd classics, apocalyptic Western Hell’s Hinges and charming New York fairy tale Lonesome. All screenings are accompanied with live music performed by specialists in improvised silent film scores. YSFF has also teamed up with Concerteenies, Sheffield-based producers of events for young children, to present two special interactive musical screenings for families.

Each day finishes with a stunning evening show. On 13th March, acclaimed improvising quartet Frame Ensemble will score Josef von Sternberg’s gangster film Underworld. Then on the 15th May New York based pianist Utsav Lal will improvise a unique score for Carl Dreyer’s emotional masterpiece The Passion of Joan of Arc.

The Sheffield spring season will take place in a specially created, intimate cinema space on the stage of the historic Abbeydale Picture House while safety work is carried out in the main cinema auditorium.

These events are part of a year-round programme of live-scored silent film we present across the North as well as our annual festival which returns in autumn 2022.

Tickets for each event and a limited number of discounted all-day passes are on sale now here.
